Colorado Springs Utilities

Company Overview

Colorado Springs Utilities is a community-owned enterprise with a 100 year reputation of excellence. As a pioneer in providing four utility services (electric, gas, water, and wastewater) in one enterprise, Colorado Springs Utilities cultivates a work culture dedicated to innovation, collaboration, and synergy. Not only is our work diverse but so are our employees who excel in a challenging work environment where career opportunities and development are encouraged and achieved. Our employees know they make a difference every day by providing critical services to the public while living and working in Money Magazine’s #1 Big Cities.

Company History

In 1878, Colorado Springs developed a municipal water system and 10 years later added a municipal wastewater system. Private businesses provided electricity and manufactured natural gas at the time.

Citizens grew dissatisfied with private utility practices and petitioned for an election to allow the city to acquire the electric and natural gas systems. In 1924, voters approved the measure.

Since then, citizens have enjoyed the benefits of controlling the operations of their municipally-owned, four-service utilities company. They've reaped the benefits ever since: fair prices, responsive service and a voice in how their company operates.

Today, more than 600,000 combined metered customers benefit from the wisdom and foresight of those early citizens in creating their own utilities company. As a result, today's customers are the owners of Colorado Springs Utilities, which has long been and will continue to be, a valuable community asset.
