American Public Power Association
Company Overview
The American Public Power Association is the voice of not-for-profit, community-owned utilities that power 2,000 towns and cities nationwide. We represent public power before the federal government to protect the interests of more than 49 million customers that public power utilities serve, and the 93,000 people they employ. Our association advocates and advises on electricity policy, technology, trends, training, and instilling pride in community-owned power.
Company History
The American Public Power Association partners with its members to promote public power, helping community-owned utilities deliver superior services through joint advocacy, education, and collaboration. It's vision is to shape the future of public power to drive a new era of community-owned electric service.
The Association was created in 1940 as a nonprofit, non-partisan organization to advance the public policy interests of its members and their consumers, and provide member services to ensure adequate, reliable electricity at a reasonable price with the proper protection of the environment

The Association participates in a wide range of legislative and regulatory forums. It advocates policies that:

Our Benefits
APPA offers its full-time regular employees a comprehensive health and welfare benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as a 401(k) retirement plan and other company-sponsored and voluntary programs.
Medical, Dental and Vision
APPA offers a choice of four medical plans through CareFirst (HMO, POS, PPO, and High Deductible Health Plan with a Health Savings Account), a PPO dental plan, and a vision plan. Employee contributes toward premiums. Employees who opt out of medical coverage receive a monthly stipend.
Time Off
Full-time regular employees accrue paid time off (PTO) each pay period, equivalent to 20 days during the first year of employment. PTO increases incrementally each year thereafter and reaches a maximum accrual after 11 years of employment.
APPA offers 13 paid holidays, paid parental leave, and paid bereavement leave.
Flexible Spending Account
Eligible medical and dependent care expenses can be paid on pre-tax basis.
Life Insurance and AD&D, Short & Long Term Disability Insurance
APPA pays 100% of the cost for Life, AD&D, and Short- and Long-Term Disability coverage. Company paid life insurance and AD&D will pay out 2 times the employee’s annual salary, to a maximum of $500,000.
Employer Profit Sharing & 401(k) Plan Match
Employees are eligible to participate in the 401(k) plan on the first of the month following date of hire. APPA matches the first 3 percent of compensation employees defer into the plan. APPA also makes a profit sharing contribution into the plan equal to 8 percent of the employee’s base salary. Contributions into the plan are made on a per-payroll basis and are fully vested.
Tuition Assistance
Tuition assistance benefits are provided for full-time regular employees to the extent that budget constraints allow. Employees may receive tuition assistance up to a maximum of $4,000 per year (tuition assistance does not include the cost of textbooks).
