Description

Sound Grid Partners (SGP) is an analytics, engineering, and advisory services firm that helps make energy storage and renewables a core part of the electric grid. We equip our customers to capture the unique opportunities of inverter-based resources while remaining firmly grounded in the engineering and business principles that keep the electric grid safe and reliable.

We are a small and nimble team based in Seattle, WA. We serve clients across the U.S. including electric utilities, renewable energy developers, and other energy service providers. Engagements with clients last months to years, and we pride ourselves on building close, long-term relationships to support them at every stage of a project lifecycle.

Location:

Seattle, WA / open to remote location

Description of Work:

We are seeking a driven, independent team leader with strong communication and customer empathy skills and demonstrated experience in energy storage and renewables analytics. Above all, we value individuals with high integrity, high competency, excellent communication skills, and curious minds.

This position will immediately join and lead client-facing projects that involve inverter-based resource modeling (technical and economic models), power system modeling, resource design, and dispatch and utilization analysis.

The person in this role will lead day-to-day project operations for some projects and support projects led by others as a subject matter expert. Project operations tasks involve managing regular client interactions and project scope, schedule, and budget. While this position will be focused on analytics, it may also involve engineering, research, or technology advisory work. SGP personnel are typically involved in 2 – 4 projects concurrently in a variety of roles.

The person in this role will also be responsible for leading and growing the SGP analytics team over time, including hiring; mentoring and training junior staff; and coordinating team loading across projects. This will initially be a relatively small part of the role and will grow over time as the analytics team expands.

As a Partner, the person in this role will also be responsible for managing and acting as the lead interface for client accounts which typically consist of multiple projects being performed for a single client. This responsibility includes engagement with client senior management, identifying opportunities to provide additional client support, and overseeing the consistent delivery of high-quality services.

Description of Ideal Job Candidate:

We are looking for a combination of the following Core Skills and Technical Competencies (please consider applying if you meet a reasonable subset)

Core Skills

  • Excellent listening and synthesis skills, especially working closely with clients to translate disparate regulatory, business, and power system objectives into a project work plan and assisting clients in navigating project work plans amidst ambiguity and uncertainty

  • Fluency and adaptability in presenting technical analysis, including context, approach, key findings, caveats, and recommended actions, to customers with diverse backgrounds including commercial and technical roles.

  • Ability to manage and mentor team members including managing project work, coordinating analytics team activities, and providing professional development mentoring to more junior team members.

  • Ability to lead projects that require diverse competencies and multiple SGP team members including project planning and synthesizing multiple diverse technical inputs to meet project requirements.

  • Skill in communicating crisply and clearly via email, writing lucid and interesting technical reports, and summarizing complex analyses in presentations that put a course of action on strong technical footing.

  • Comfort with uncertainty and experience making risk-adjusted and uncertainty-adjusted recommendations for action.

  • Technical project management: ability to advance project objectives through a combination of using technical knowledge, driving objective-oriented collaboration, and carefully tracking project scope, schedule, and budget.

Technical Competencies

  • Experience developing and using techno-economic modeling and analytics tools in Excel (required) and Python (preferred), or MATLAB, R, or related language, with specific experience in inverter-based resource and related analytics.

  • Modeling of electric power systems

  • Energy flow modeling and value analysis of storage and solar + storage projects in support of optimal design and project development activities

  • Time-series modeling of storage dispatch strategies

  • Analysis and dispatch optimization of operational resources

  • Experience using common utility and electrical market data sources and formats, electrical calculations, and financial metrics used in energy project modeling

  • Experience or familiarity with Benefit-Cost Analysis to support policy analysis and utility regulatory proceedings

  • Experience or familiarity with analytics and policy in one or more wholesale electric power markets or inverter-based resource operations at an electric utility.

  • Experience or significant exposure to electric utility operations including typical technical, business, and regulatory practices in the electric utility industry.

  • Knowledge of the evolving landscape for electric utilities, grid modernization and regulatory trends.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of practical experience working with energy storage and/or renewables analytics in an electric utility, project developer, regulatory, or technology company.
