The primary responsibilities of this role, Principle Plant Engineer CU (Central Utilities), are to: 

  • Provide technical assistance to supervisors and operators within the Central Utilities Department;
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and provide solutions to limit impact of product output;
  • Design and implement minor to major projects, which improve processes within Central Utilities;
  • Complete within budget and in a timely manner;
  • Ensure Safety and GMP compliance of Utility systems site wide;
  • Provide detailed information to agencies and participate in internal and external audits;
  • Identify and streamline non-value added activities and provide alternative solutions to enhance system reliability;
  • Meet with operations and identify opportunities to improve equipment SOP’s and task lists. Provide training as the SME utility systems;
  • Maintain operations within budget through continuous monitoring of contractor and vendor expense;
  • Provide technical engineering support for assigned units by improving quality and rates, reducing costs and emissions, and improving safety, reliability, and operability of the facilities;
  • Provide technical support and lead multi-discipline teams to identify, investigate, and solve repetitive mechanical failures;
  • Provide technical assistance with new equipment, systems, and plant start-up;
  • Track plant maintenance costs and repairs due to reliability problems;
  • Coordinate and review site utilities safety and reliability inspections;
  • Ensure plan, design, and execute necessary repairs and/or modifications to resolve discrepancies identified by Inspection Programs;
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, engineering procedures, plant safety standards, pressure safety design and environmental standards on all projects and tasks;
  • Initiate and participate in project safety reviews;
  • Provide scope of plant improvement projects;
  • Provide information and data as required by Project Engineering or other end users;
  • Approve design specifications;
  • Project management and detailed engineering of smaller and medium sized projects (AR, <$1,000,000), including planning, detailed design, procurement, construction management, quality, budget and optimization;
  • Provide plant and production input and project engineering support for large projects, (AR, >$1 million);
  • Develop complete engineering design packages to aid in the implementation of plant modifications or repairs;
  • Interface with end-user groups and respective stakeholders in development of scope and design as well as safe execution and completion of construction work;
  • Coordinate the development and maintaining of detailed site utilities drawings and specifications;
  • Specify or guide specification and purchase of major utility equipment and piping items;
  • Support facilities start-up through consulting with CapEx projects or plant personnel;
  • Serve on the project start-up team when assigned;
  • Ensure completion and documenting projects by finishing punch list items, reconciling actual project costs with estimated costs, and managing collection, publication, and archival of essential project records via file consolidation;
  • Guide less experienced engineers when required, supervise consultants and peers working in a supporting role on projects;
  • Develop and maintain equipment documentation as equipment descriptions, spare parts, equipment lists, histories, manuals, flow sheet documentation, drawings, etc., to ensure the continued reliability of the plant;
  • Assist in maintaining spending within budget limitations;
  • Participate in cross functional teams and support site initiatives;
  • Seek opportunities to enhance system knowledge of site utilities;
  • Initiate cause investigation for system failures and incident reports, as SME of utilities;
  • Ensure reliable performance of the site utilities generation and distribution system by establishing preventive maintenance programs and ensuring execution per established frequency;
  • Be responsible for planning and execution of utility upgrade projects as part of life cycle management including Budget planning and execution of CapEx projects;
  • Be responsible engineer on large capex projects like CCTC- define requirements for capital Project and ensure delivery to meet requirements;
  • Be responsible for review of local and regional engineering standards and ensuring they are aligned with latest industry standards (ISPE, ASME).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution with at least eight years of Engineering experience, OR Maters of Science with at least four years of Engineering experience or combination of education and experience;
  • At least eight years of experience working with utility systems to include Refrigeration, Boilers or Purified Water Systems;
  • Thorough understanding of controls which interface with utilities, such as BAS, DCS or SCADA;
  • Proficient computer skills to include excel, word and PowerPoint, familiarity business platform for such as SAP or equivalent, scheduling tools and to prepare data for presentations;
  • Be able to create spreadsheet for tracking system reliability;
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of engineering concepts as applied to site utilities;
  • A comprehensive knowledge base of energy efficient equipment, processes, and systems;
  • Executed engineering projects valued up to at least $250k USD or complex multifunctional projects execution;
  • Special Skill/Knowledge Demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills;
  • Experience with FAT, SAT, Commissioning and Qualification, including hands on experience starting-up and running new equipment, resolving technical equipment issues, developing turn-over packages;
  • High level of urgency and ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities;
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex equipment / systems and supporting production equipment, facilities, and utility systems;
  • Be able to troubleshoot equipment failures immediately and communicate status to engineers, maintenance, and production;
  • Be able to support and prioritize many diverse activities simultaneously while meeting schedule commitments;
  • Flexibility to participate in rotational on-call support and / or weekend coverage on occasion;
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills;
  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a wide customer base.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineering experience in plant/facility/manufacturing operation function;
  • Refrigeration or Facilities Management;
  • Experience in a GMP / GLP environment;
  • Proficient computer skills to include Excel, Word and PowerPoint, SAP, or equivalent experience.
