Description
Position DescriptionSeattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
The Transmission and Distribution Business Unit has openings for Journey Level Cable Splicers. Cable Splicers are responsible for splicing high voltage and secondary network systems (power cables used in underground distribution) and street lighting systems. This position installs, maintains and repairs electrical wiring systems. The work requires an expert knowledge of electricity and electrical theory, the methods and tools used in cable splicing, and safety rules and procedures. The ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings and to use specialized hand and power tools is also required.
These positions will report to a Network Crew Chief/Supervisor and will report out of the North Service Center.
Job Responsibilities
- Splices, maintains and terminates all types of high and low voltage power cables (lead-covered, gas-filled, oil-filled, etc.).
- Pulls, racks and secures high and low voltage cables in manholes, conduit, tunnels, vaults and other installations.
- Installs, maintains, repairs and removes high and low voltage conductors, transformers, network protectors, relays, switches, junction boxes and related electrical equipment.
- Installs, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs electrical equipment required for spot network distribution systems in high-rise buildings.
- Locates and repairs electrical faults in underground network distribution systems, substations and other distribution systems.
- Installs, reroutes, maintains and repairs street lighting systems and equipment.
- Bends, installs, maintains and repairs all types of conduits.
- Works with distribution system maps, feeder maps, and cut sheets to perform switching and tagging for power dispatchers to de-energize lines.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs protection systems, such as fire, anti-corrosion, and cathodic protection systems.
- Performs high voltage D.C. tests on power cables and equipment.
- Inspects work done by private contractors.
- Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:
Experience: Requires three years of experience in the electrical trades working under the supervision of a journey level Cable Splicer with at least one year on a cable splicing crew (or a combination of education and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Certification/License: Current Washington State driver's license and a combination license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Work Environment/Physical Demand:
- Works outdoors in all types of weather.
- Works with energized equipment and cables in confined areas, at heights, and in heavy traffic.
- Works with toxic/hazardous substances and molten lead and insulating compounds heated to 700ยบ F.
- Work requires extended periods of physical exertion, including lifting and manipulating objects that weigh more than 50 pounds.
- May work nights, weekends and holidays.
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
- 4 years or more of journey level Cable Splicer experience.

The full salary range for this position is hourly rate $77.36 - $77.36
